2010 Mentoring Exhibition

Calumet

Our first public exhibition of work by the 38 mentees in the 2010 YPA Mentoring Program opened on January 12th, 2011 at the Calumet Gallery in New York and ran for two weeks.

Our theme, Answering Adversity

Leading photographers shared their creativity and passion for photography with a group of talented college students through a unique mentoring program built around a social theme.

The world is facing economic hardship not seen since the Great Depression. Unemployment, home foreclosures, loss of savings and retirement are leaving communities, businesses, families and individuals faced with tough choices. How are people answering the adversity to emerge even stronger?

Reminiscent of the WPA photography project launched by the US government during the Great Depression to record the lives of everyday Americans, our initiative sent teams of emerging photographers and their mentors into the field to photograph stories of innovation, determination and courage during hard times.
